about
The lyrics for 'Bitter Coffee' came to me while I was in Sweden with my wife this past October. We were there for her stepmom's funeral and we also had the task of cleaning out and packing up the contents of the apartment she lived in. We didn't have a coffee pot in the apartment, so we would boil water and then use a pour-over coffee cone brewer device. The coffee was strong. This one particularly chilly morning, I forgot to put Splenda in my strong coffee and, naturally, it was pretty bitter when I sipped it. That inspired the opening line of the song: "Bitter cold, bitter coffee, trying to shake this feeling off me. Like an aching in my bones, I just wanna be back home." - All that was true. I was ready to come back to the states. But I couldn't write an entire song whining about how I wanted to go home. It was then that the song sort of took on a life or story of its own. Give it a listen and let me know what you think. One thing is for sure... Todd Kreuzburg did a stellar job bringing this song to life from a production standpoint. His arrangements are beautiful. Really. Check it out. And if you like it, please share it.
lyrics
Bitter cold, bitter coffee
Try to shake this feeling off me
Like an aching in my bones
I just want to be back home
The nights are dark here, days are colder
And I remember how I’d hold her in my arms
We moved forward cuz we had to
There’s no use in looking back to
Yesterday cuz we’ve moved on
Both uncertain what’s beyond
The nights are dark here, days are slower
I wonder did I ever know her heart at all
And all this regret
Inside my head
Always waiting… thought by now that it’d be fading
In the still before the day breaks
I go over all the mistakes
Doubt she ever understood me
More concerned with what I should be
The nights are dark here, days are lonely
Guess she kinda thought she owned me all along
And I can’t forget
Words that she said
I’m here waiting … in this mess that we created
Between today and tomorrow
There must be something I can borrow
From the days when all our laughter
Signaled happy ever after
The nights are dark here days are gray
I’m just trying to find a way to turn the page
